CHILANGA CEMENT PLC CELEBRATES
ZAMBIA’S 60TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY WITH TREE PLANTING INITIATIVE IN NDOLA
Ndola, Zambia – October 10, 2024 – In celebration of Zambia’s 60th Independence Anniversary,
Chilanga Cement PLC, in partnership with CSR Network Zambia, launched a fruit
tree planting project today at Masala Secondary School in Ndola, under the
theme Zambia @ 60: Plant a Tree. This event, marking the start of a
nationwide environmental initiative, saw the donation and planting of 300
trees—60 each at Itawa Combined School, Dzikomo Primary School, Masala
Secondary School, Ndeke Combined School, and Ndeke Caritas Secondary School.
This initiative is part of Chilanga
Cement’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and community development,
aligning with Zambia’s national independence celebrations.
The launch was officiated by Ndola
District Education Board Secretary, Mrs. Chanda Chewe, representing the
District Commissioner, Mr. Joseph Phiri. Mrs. Chewe commended Chilanga Cement
for its consistent support of community-driven projects.
“The donation of these trees is a
fitting symbol of our nation’s growth, life, and future. Like our independence,
trees provide sustenance, shelter, and protection. I am particularly pleased
that we are planting these trees in schools, where young minds will learn to
value and protect our environment,” said Mr. Phiri in a speech delivered by
Mrs. Chewe.
Mr. Phiri also acknowledged Chilanga
Cement’s other contributions to the district, including infrastructure support
for Ndola Teaching Hospital and local community schools.
Speaking on behalf of Chilanga Cement
CEO, Mr. Chai Jianping, Ndola Plant Manager, Mr. Xu Maosheng, reaffirmed the
company’s commitment to environmental sustainability and youth empowerment.
“By planting these trees in schools,
we are planting seeds of knowledge, hope, and environmental responsibility. At
Chilanga Cement, we believe that schools are where young minds are shaped. It
is fitting that the next generation will witness and care for these trees, just
as they will carry forward the legacy of independence, which Chilanga Cement
has been part of for the past 60 years,” said Mr. Xu.
CSR Network Zambia CEO, Mr. Lee
Muzala, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the broader impact of the project.
“This project represents more than
just tree planting. It instills environmental stewardship from a young age,
teaching students that sustainability is a lifelong commitment,” said Mr.
Muzala.
He highlighted how the five
participating schools have each embraced unique approaches to engaging students
in the project. At Itawa Combined School, primary learners have adopted an
“Adopt-a-Plant” initiative, taking personal responsibility for nurturing the
trees. At Ndeke Caritas, an entire class has committed to caring for the trees
together, fostering teamwork and collective responsibility.
The event underscores Chilanga Cement
a member of Huaxin group’s strong focus on corporate social responsibility
(CSR) and its role as a key partner in Zambia’s sustainable development. In
addition to the tree planting initiative, Chilanga Cement has supported various
infrastructure projects in Ndola, including the construction of classrooms and
road paving at Ndola and Kitwe Teaching Hospitals.
As Zambia celebrates 60 years of
independence, this tree-planting initiative serves as a powerful reminder of
the importance of protecting natural resources and building a sustainable
future for generations to come.
