CHILANGA CEMENT PLC PLANTS 600 FRUIT TREES IN SCHOOLS IN CHILANGA AND NDOLA TO COMMEMORATE ZAMBIA’S 60TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY
Mwembeshi, Chilanga – 17 October 2024: In celebration of Zambia’s 60th Independence Anniversary, Chilanga Cement Plc, in partnership with CSR Network Zambia, hosted a tree-planting initiative today at Mwembeshi Secondary School. The event, which saw the planting of 300 fruit trees, was attended by several distinguished guests, including government officials, local leaders, and members of the community. This initiative is part of Chilanga Cement’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change. It follows similar activities held last week in Ndola, where an additional 300 fruit trees were planted across five schools.
Chilanga Cement’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Jianping Chai, highlighted the company’s long-standing role in Zambia’s development, saying, “As we plant these trees, we are also planting the seeds of knowledge, hope, and environmental responsibility. These trees will stand as a long-lasting reminder of our shared commitment to a greener and more sustainable future.”
Mr. Chai also mentioned Chilanga Cement’s ongoing efforts to support local schools and infrastructure projects, furthering the company’s legacy in Zambia since 1949.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Education, Mr. Douglas Siakalima, Assistant Director at the National Science Center, Mr. Mateke Vimbi, emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing climate change. “Today, as we commemorate 60 years of independence, we are reminded of how essential it is for every citizen and organization to play their part in safeguarding our environment. The trees we plant today represent life and the promise of a sustainable future.”
Chilanga Member of Parliament, Hon. Hlazo Sipho, also acknowledged the significance of tree planting in combating climate change. “The act of planting a tree is symbolic—it signifies our collective responsibility in the fight against climate change. By planting trees today, we are taking a crucial step toward addressing this global challenge,” he remarked.
The initiative was further supported by Chilanga District Education Board Secretary, Dr. Mirriam Namezi, who emphasized the importance of engaging young people in environmental conservation. “By planting trees today, we are investing in a healthier and more sustainable future. These trees will provide shade, sustenance, and beauty for generations to come.”
CSR Network Executive Director, Mr. Lee Muzala, praised the collaboration with Chilanga Cement, noting that the trees planted today are “seeds of hope and resilience” that will benefit the schools and communities for years to come.
As Zambia celebrates 60 years of independence, this tree-planting initiative stands as a testament to the power of partnership and collective responsibility in building a sustainable and prosperous future.
